Food & Beverage instrumentation

In brief

Food and beverage plants measure product flow with sanitary magnetic or Coriolis meters, verify CIP with conductivity, temperature and flow, monitor tank level non-invasively, and treat process wastewater with pH control. Supmea offers a sanitary electromagnetic flow meter, the FCC-300 Coriolis meter, RTD transmitters, radar level and pH/ORP analyzers for these points.

The measurement challenge

Hygiene and cleanability drive instrument choice in food processing. Wetted parts must withstand CIP chemicals and temperatures, and connections should follow hygienic design practice such as 3-A Sanitary Standards and EHEDG guidelines.

Verifying that CIP actually ran (correct flow, temperature, concentration and time) protects both product and audit records.

  • Hygienic connections (tri-clamp) and cleanable wetted parts are required.
  • CIP cycles swing from cold water to hot caustic.
  • Viscous products such as syrups, sauces and oils need mass measurement.
  • Process wastewater has highly variable pH.

CIP verification

A complete CIP record combines return flow (velocity ≥1.5 m/s is a common target for pipe cleaning), return temperature, and conductivity as a proxy for caustic or acid concentration. Supmea's conductivity range (e.g. SUP-TDS210) covers the concentration point.

Frequently asked questions

Which flow meter for milk or juice?

A sanitary electromagnetic flow meter. Both products are conductive, and the full bore is easy to clean.

Why Coriolis for oils?

Edible oils are non-conductive and their viscosity changes with temperature; Coriolis measures mass regardless.
