Oil & Gas instrumentation
Oil and gas facilities use vortex meters for fuel gas, utility air and steam; Coriolis meters for liquid hydrocarbon allocation and loading; pressure and temperature transmitters on separators and pipelines; and radar or DP level on tanks and vessels. Supmea supplies the SUP-LUGB vortex, FCC-300 Coriolis, pressure and DP transmitters and radar level meters for these points.
The measurement challenge
Upstream and midstream operators need instruments that survive vibration, temperature extremes and remote sites with limited power. Battery-powered vortex meters and two-wire transmitters reduce field wiring.
For hazardous areas, specify explosion-protected versions and confirm the certification scheme required by the project.
- Hydrocarbons are non-conductive, so magnetic flow meters do not apply.
- Gas composition varies, so mass flow or compensated volume is needed.
- Hazardous-area certification is required.
- Remote sites have limited power.

| Separator pressure | Pressure | SUP-PE100 Compact Pressure Transmitter | Wide range up to 60 MPa |
| Pipeline temperature | Temperature | SUP-ST500 Programmable Temperature Transmitter | RTD/TC to 4–20 mA |
| Tank level | Level | WSR201 60 GHz Radar Level Meter | Non-contact (check dielectric constant) |
| Flare / vent gas | Flow | SUP-MF Thermal Gas Mass Flow Meter | Low-flow sensitivity (composition-dependent) |
Mass vs volume in hydrocarbon service
Hydrocarbon density changes with temperature and composition. Coriolis meters report mass and density directly; vortex meters need the compensated SUP-LUGB-A for corrected volume or mass. See vortex compensation explained.
Frequently asked questions
Can a magnetic flow meter measure crude oil?
No. Crude and refined hydrocarbons are not conductive. Use Coriolis, turbine, vortex or ultrasonic meters.
Is radar suitable for LPG tanks?
LPG has a low dielectric constant. Use a radar model specified for low-εr media, or a differential-pressure level transmitter.
