Water & Wastewater instrumentation

In brief

Water and wastewater plants measure flow at inlet, process and outlet; level in wet wells, clarifiers and reservoirs; and pH, ORP, dissolved oxygen and turbidity for process control and discharge compliance. Supmea's core set is the LDG electromagnetic flow meter, WSR201 radar and SUP-MP ultrasonic level, SUP-PH6.5 pH/ORP and SUP-DM2800 DO analyzers.

The measurement challenge

Utilities buy instruments for a long life in wet, buried and corrosive locations, and for data that holds up in a compliance report. That favours instruments with no moving parts, IP68 options and simple Modbus integration into SCADA.

Supmea electromagnetic flow meters hold NSF certification for drinking water use (announced in 2025), which matters for potable-water contact in North American projects.

  • Buried and flooded meter pits need remote-type IP68 converters.
  • Raw sewage and sludge carry rags and grit, so use full-bore meters with no obstruction.
  • Aeration is the largest energy load, and DO control directly cuts blower energy.
  • Discharge permits require reliable pH and flow records.

Closing the aeration control loop

Pairing a DO analyzer in each aeration zone with a thermal air flow meter on each drop leg lets the control system distribute air by demand instead of running blowers at fixed output. US EPA guidance on energy efficiency for water utilities identifies aeration as the main target.

Compliance data

Discharge permits under programmes such as the US NPDES rely on effluent flow and quality records. Use analyzers with Modbus or 4–20 mA into a logging SCADA, and document calibration. See how often to calibrate pH sensors.

Frequently asked questions

Which flow meter is standard for wastewater?

The electromagnetic flow meter. It has no obstruction for solids and no moving parts, and handles sludge with a suitable liner.

Radar or ultrasonic for a wet well?

Ultrasonic is usually adequate and cheaper; choose radar where foam, condensation or temperature swings affect echoes.
