HVAC & District Energy instrumentation
HVAC and district energy systems measure chilled- and hot-water flow and ΔT for energy calculation, differential pressure for pump control, cooling-tower water chemistry, and compressed air and steam for utilities. Supmea's set is the LDG electromagnetic flow meter, SUP-ST500 temperature transmitters, SUP-PE100 pressure transmitters, SUP-PH6.5 pH/ORP and SUP-LUGB vortex meters.
The measurement challenge
Chiller plant efficiency (kW/ton) cannot be managed without flow and ΔT on each chiller and loop. Variable-speed pumping needs a differential pressure signal at the remote end of the loop.
Cooling towers concentrate minerals as water evaporates. pH, ORP and conductivity control bleed and chemical dosing to limit scale, corrosion and biological growth.
- Low ΔT syndrome: accurate ΔT is needed to diagnose it.
- BMS integration through BACnet gateways, Modbus or 4–20 mA.
- Retrofit in occupied buildings favours meters that install without long shutdowns.
- Cooling-tower chemistry changes continuously.

Energy metering
Thermal energy = volume flow × density × cp × ΔT, integrated over time. Choose a flow meter with low pressure loss and stable zero (magnetic for conductive water), and matched temperature sensors. Accuracy targets for heat meters are set by standards such as EN 1434 and OIML R75.
Frequently asked questions
Why use a magmeter for chilled water instead of a turbine?
No moving parts to wear in a continuously running loop, and no pressure drop, which saves pump energy.
Where should the loop DP sensor go?
Typically at the hydraulically most remote coil, so the pump holds just enough pressure for the worst-case branch.
